Letting Patrons Shift their Data onto Your Computers

Today Karen Schneider started a thread on WEB4LIB carrying forward a PUBLIB thread about Chris Rippel's list of things that make your library look incompetent/stupid, and George S. Porter contributed the following idea.

"The first major industrial design advance on the WinTel side that I encountered was the addition of USB and FireWire ports on the front of a Dell, although they were cleverly hidden behind an unlabelled, opaque plastic flap. Not at all convenient for public access workstations.

A couple of months ago, the Caltech Library System started installing media dashboards <http://library.caltech.edu/about/mediadash.htm> on library workstations. Dumbness factor dropped like a rock!"

Robin Boulton then tried to confirm that George was referring to the Ultra Media Dashboard, which looks like it would help with those patrons that want to use their own flash drives. Something for public and school libraries to consider, too.

Investigating New Blogging Software

After all of my other connectivity problems as of late, now Radio is acting up and not publishing my posts when I post them. As far as I can tell, Userland's upgrade focus is on Manila, not Radio, and while I love using blogging software that integrates a news aggregator, I'm getting tired of having major problems with Radio every few months.

I think it may finally be time to switch, so posting may be light here (unintentionally or not!) while I figure out my next move.
