GLLS2007 Is Underway!

Even though I'm at my own conference, I don't think I'll have much time to blog while here. It's killing me because we've already heard three incredible presentations that I normally would have liveblogged. Day one was exactly what I'd hoped it would be, with the release of some pretty big news.

  • Henry Jenkins talked about participatory culture and the opportunities for libraries in the world described in his white paper for the MacArthur Foundation. They are abundant.

  • Scott Nicholson officially released his survey data about gaming in public libraries. Lead figure: 77% of public libraries support gaming in some form. Again, abundant opportunities, and a much larger market than we might have thought for a service that isn't really new. More info here, including the downloadable white paper.

  • Eli Neiburger made a great case for gaming in libraries, showed some video of how gamers' perceptions of the library have changed, and then announced GT System. The Ann Arbor District Library is opening up their tournament software to all libraries in order to run regional and national tournaments, which gives us a national leaderboard for library tournaments. Oh, and it's free for libraries to join.

The tag for the event is GLLS2007, and you can watch the TechSource Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium wiki for links to archived content. I'm trying to grab as much audio and video as I can to post afterwards.
