Rafe Is Reviewing RSS Aggregators One-By-One
"ometime last Fall it dawned on me that I'd really like to be able to share what news feeds I'm reading. The hope being that others would be willing to do the same. I looked at the tools available at the time and found them lacking. So I slowly but surely convinced Jeff Barr to implement something for it on Syndic8. The end result of my cajoling is the Personal List feature of Syndic8. You can use a personal list to share what feeds you're reading with others. They can see your feed lists in any number of different formats including OCS, HTML, opml or even as an RSS feed. The lists here on Syndication News are all drawn from my personal lists. The ones I read regularly using my aggregator are kept in my Current Subscriptions list. There are also several other lists that help me coordinate groups of feeds. The lists covering RSS topics are used to create the sidebar boxes here on the website. The Recently Spotted list contains feeds I've recently discovered that look like they might be interesting. These are just my own informal groupings. There's nothing about the list feature that mandates or controls whether or not the feeds on a list truly fall within the scope suggested by the title. I try to give them informative names and leave it at that. For folks that really want to get into categorization you can actually subscribe to entire categories of feeds. This is a little more complicated to explain but it's pretty neat when you see it in action. The categories section of Syndic8 supports several different schemes. You can visit a section and add it to one of your personal lists (or several). Anytime your list gets used it will automatically include the feeds from within the subscribed category. This way you're guaranteed to see what's been added to a category without having to keep track of it yourself. The downside is that, currently, the category data is a bit limited. If you've got a feed and you want it listed in the category hierarchy, go submit your website URL to dmoz . I cross-reference the site URLs from the entire feed database against it once a month to build the categories. While this isn't the speediest process it helps support the fine efforts of the dmoz crowd. There's little sense is having the whole dmoz effort duplicated here. I'm hoping that as people recognize the value of XML newsfeeds they'll also start to appreciate the need for even a tiny bit of categorization. That's why there's more than one scheme for categorizing on Syndic8. Not all hierarchies have the right place for everything. dmoz is just one of several possible schemes to use. More can be added as user needs demand. Give the personal list feature set a spin. See if it's something you can use. As always if you have comments, pro or con, you're more than welcome to send me an e-mail at wkearney99@hotmail.com." [Syndication News from Bill Kearney]
